Technology Overview

What is a Profile Projector?

A profile projector — also called an optical comparator or shadowgraph — uses a precision optical system and a halogen light source to project a magnified shadow image of a component onto a large measurement screen.

The operator can compare the part profile against a reference overlay chart, measure dimensions using digital readout (DRO) encoders, or capture data automatically via integrated metrology software. Unlike touch-based CMMs, profile projectors are non-contact — the part is never scratched or deflected.

They work equally well on opaque and semi-transparent workpieces, making them versatile for diverse manufacturing environments.

Core Applications

  • Thread form verification — metric, UNC, UNF, trapezoidal, Acme
  • Gear tooth profile and involute inspection
  • Cutting tool geometry — drills, taps, milling inserts
  • Stamped and formed sheet-metal profiles
  • Medical device components — implants, surgical instruments
  • Injection-moulded plastic profiles and parting lines
  • Seal grooves, keyways, spline forms
  • Long shafts and turned parts (horizontal models)

How It Works

1

Illuminate

A 150W halogen lamp projects a collimated beam of light through (or onto) the workpiece.

2

Magnify

A telecentric projection lens captures the shadow and magnifies it 5× to 100× onto the glass screen.

3

Measure

The operator reads XY coordinates from the DRO encoders, or compares against an overlay chart.

4

Report

With the OP-1000 software, a full dimensional report with pass/fail tolerances is generated automatically.

Ideal For
Aerospace, dies, large overlay chart comparison
The PP 600VE is Optomech's flagship vertical comparator, offering the largest available screen in this configuration. The generous Ø600 mm screen is ideal for working with detailed overlay charts for complex profiles — the larger display area makes simultaneous comparison of multiple dimensions significantly easier. Preferred in aerospace (aerofoil sections), die and mould inspection, and any application where a critical profile must be visually confirmed against a nominal overlay chart.

Horizontal Profile Projectors

Engineered specifically for long, shaft-type, and turned parts. The part axis aligns with the optical axis — enabling full-length thread, lead, and contour inspection without repositioning.

The PP 400H brings motorized XY stage movement to horizontal comparator work. Smooth motorized traverse means the operator can move across long parts without disturbing the part or the optical focus — critical for accurate thread pitch measurement. Twin fibre-optic surface illumination adds the ability to inspect surface features in addition to the silhouette profile. Recommended for fastener manufacturers, threaded rod suppliers, and turned-component job shops.

Ideal For
Long shafts, lead screws, ball screws, worm shafts
The PP 600H is the most capable profile projector in the Optomech range. Its 300 × 600 mm traverse — with 600 mm along the part axis — means exceptionally long shafts, lead screws, and ball screws can be inspected end-to-end without repositioning. The Ø600 mm screen combined with the heaviest, most rigid base (250 kg) makes this the reference instrument for precision shaft manufacturers, ball-screw producers, and heavy engineering component suppliers. When you need to measure a 500 mm lead screw thread-to-thread with sub-micron confidence, the PP 600H is the correct instrument.

Precision Optics: The Heart of the Instrument

Telecentric Projection Lenses

Optomech profile projectors use parfocal telecentric lenses — where the primary optical ray bundle is parallel to the optical axis across the full field of view. The practical benefit: image magnification does not change as the part moves along the Z axis.

This means minor Z-positioning errors do not introduce magnification errors — critical when inspecting parts of varying height or when the operator cannot precisely locate the part at the focal plane.

Available Magnifications:

10×
20×
50×
100×

Each lens is individually calibrated with a NABL-traceable calibration certificate supplied.

💡

Dual Illumination System

Profile (Transmitted) Illumination: 24V / 150W halogen lamp projects a collimated beam through the workpiece, creating a sharp shadow silhouette on the screen. This is the primary mode for all contour measurement — threads, radii, gear teeth, complex forms.

Surface (Reflected) Illumination: Twin fibre-optic conduits direct light directly onto the part surface from both sides. Reveals surface features, steps, holes, and markings that are not visible in silhouette. Standard on PP 400H and PP 600H horizontal models; available as an option on all vertical models.

Tip: For complete inspection of a part that has both external contour features and surface markings or holes, use both illumination modes in sequence — profile light first for dimensional measurement, then switch to surface light to verify feature presence.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a vertical and a horizontal profile projector? +
In a vertical profile projector, the part rests on a horizontal XY stage and the image is projected upward onto a screen. This suits compact and flat parts — gears, inserts, stamped components. A horizontal profile projector aligns the part along the optical axis and supports it between centres or in V-blocks. This is the correct choice for long cylindrical parts such as shafts, lead screws, worm gears, and threaded rods where you need to inspect the full length without repositioning.
What is a telecentric lens and why does it matter for profile projection? +
A telecentric lens keeps the chief optical ray parallel to the optical axis, so image magnification stays constant regardless of Z-positioning. On a non-telecentric lens, even a 0.5 mm axial positioning error changes magnification enough to cause measurable errors. For quality-critical inspection — threads, radii, gear teeth — telecentric optics are essential, not optional. All Optomech profile projectors use parfocal telecentric projection lenses.
Which DRO should I choose — OP-250, OP-500, or OP-1000? +
Choose OP-250 for direct coordinate readout and go/no-go decisions by a trained operator. Upgrade to OP-500 if you want automatic edge detection to reduce operator variability in repetitive inspection tasks. Choose OP-1000 if you need CAD DXF import for nominal-vs-actual comparison, SPC reporting, or reverse engineering capability. Most automotive quality labs find the OP-500 the practical baseline; development labs and toolrooms benefit most from the OP-1000.
Can Optomech profile projectors be used for thread inspection? +
Yes — thread form inspection is one of the primary applications. For external threads on cylindrical parts (bolts, screws, studs), the horizontal PP 400H or PP 600H is preferred because the thread axis aligns with the optical axis, giving a true cross-section view. Thread parameters measurable include pitch, included angle, root radius, crest flat, and thread height, using standard overlay charts or DRO measurement.
What projection accuracy do Optomech profile projectors achieve? +
All Optomech profile projectors achieve ±0.05% projection accuracy, certified by NABL-traceable calibration. For a 100 mm screen dimension, the error is within ±0.05 mm. Linear encoders provide 1 µm resolution, and the rotary encoder delivers 1 arc-second angular resolution. These specifications apply to all five models in the range.
What is the difference between profile illumination and surface illumination? +
Profile (transmitted) illumination projects a shadow silhouette of the part onto the screen — used for all contour measurement. Surface (reflected) illumination uses twin fibre-optic conduits to illuminate the part surface directly, revealing features, holes, and markings not visible in silhouette. Horizontal models PP 400H and PP 600H include both systems as standard; vertical models include profile illumination standard with surface illumination available as an option.
Do Optomech profile projectors come with calibration certificates? +
Yes. Every instrument is supplied with a NABL-traceable calibration certificate covering projection accuracy and encoder linearity. The NABL accreditation is internationally recognised and accepted for QMS audits under ISO 9001 and IATF 16949. Periodic re-calibration is available through Optomech's service team.
Can I upgrade my profile projector to a better DRO later? +
Yes. The DRO systems (OP-250, OP-500, OP-1000) connect via the encoder interface and are independent of the optical body. A machine purchased with an OP-250 can be upgraded to OP-500 or OP-1000 at any time without replacing the projector. This allows customers to start with a lower-cost configuration and invest in advanced software when the inspection programme requires it. Contact Optomech for upgrade pricing.
