Operating Principle

Two Steps. That's All.

The QMM is designed so that production operators can run 100% inspection without metrology training. Two steps — create a template once, then measure every part forever.

1

Create Template (once per part number)

Place a good reference part on the measurement surface. Draw a selection box around the part edge in the software. The system automatically detects the full contour.

Set nominal dimensions and tolerances for every feature you want to monitor. Name and save the programme. Done — it goes into the SQL database and never needs to be created again.

What gets set at this step:
  • Part contour auto-detection
  • Nominal dimensions per feature
  • Tolerance bands (upper/lower)
  • Report format and output settings
2

Measure & Validate (every part, every time)

Select the part programme by part number. Place any part on the measurement surface — within ±1 mm of position. Press Start.

The system auto-aligns to the part, measures every programmed dimension simultaneously, compares to tolerance, and generates a pass/fail report. All saved to the SQL database. Cycle complete in under 3 seconds.

What happens automatically:
  • Part auto-alignment (no precision fixturing)
  • All dimensions measured simultaneously
  • Pass/fail per dimension
  • Report saved with timestamp and batch ID

Why 100% Inspection Matters

Sampling-Based Inspection (AQL)

  • Inspects 1–5% of parts — the rest leave uninspected
  • Statistically accepts that a fraction of defects will escape to customers
  • Cannot detect systematic process drift between sampling intervals
  • Results are averages — individual defective parts can hide in the sample
  • Does not support per-serial-number traceability
  • Not acceptable for safety-critical, medical, or aerospace supply chains

100% Inspection with QMM

  • Every single part measured before it moves or ships
  • Zero defective parts escape — every non-conformance is caught at source
  • Process drift detected immediately — alarm triggers before tolerance is exceeded
  • Individual part results stored — full per-serial traceability
  • Supports IATF 16949 zero-defect programmes and customer mandated 100% inspection
  • Automated digital I/O triggers rejection of failed parts immediately

Valuable for stepped forgings, complex stampings, and multi-feature turned parts.

Which Field of View Size to Choose?

650 Series
65 × 45 mm FOV — for fasteners, inserts, small stamped components, pins, clips. Highest pixel resolution relative to part size for resolving the finest features.
900 Series
90 × 60 mm FOV — the most common size for automotive and engineering. Standard stampings, blades, brackets, gears, mid-size turned parts.
1200 Series
120 × 79 mm FOV — for large pressed panels, large injection mouldings, sheet-metal formed sections. Captures the full part profile in one shot.

The Technology Behind 100% Inspection

📷

20 Megapixel CMOS Sensor

High pixel count captures the full part profile in a single exposure with sufficient resolution to resolve fine edges and sub-millimetre features. No stitching. No multi-image acquisition. One shot — all dimensions.

🔭

Double Telecentric Lens

Telecentricity on both the object side and the image side ensures constant magnification across the entire field of view, regardless of part height variation. Eliminates parallax-induced measurement error — the primary source of inaccuracy in non-telecentric machine vision systems used for measurement.

💙

Blue LED Telecentric Illumination

Blue wavelength (450–490 nm) maximises edge contrast by avoiding the broader spectral response of white light. Combined with telecentric illumination, it creates a sharp, consistent silhouette edge at every point in the field — enabling reliable edge detection even on challenging surface finishes and colours.

🎯

Automatic Part Alignment

When the part is placed on the measurement surface, the software automatically locates datum features and aligns the measurement coordinate system — within ±1 mm positioning tolerance. The operator does not need to precisely locate or fixture the part. Parts can be placed by hand, by conveyor, or by robot arm.

🗄️

SQL Database Architecture

All measurement results are stored in a central SQL database. Part templates, measurement data, pass/fail history, and SPC trends are accessible from any networked workstation. Supports up to 50 QMM machines on a single LAN with a shared database of over 5,000 part templates.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Quick Measuring Machine and how does it differ from a Vision Measuring Machine?+
A QMM captures the entire part profile in a single camera shot and measures all programmed dimensions simultaneously — in under 3 seconds per part. A VMM is a general-purpose lab instrument where the operator drives the camera to each feature sequentially. The QMM is designed for 100% production inspection at manufacturing speed; the VMM is designed for flexible laboratory measurement of diverse parts.
What is a telecentric lens and why does the QMM use one?+
A telecentric lens keeps image magnification constant across the entire field of view regardless of part height variations. Non-telecentric lenses produce parallax distortion — parts at the edges of the field or parts that are slightly closer or further from the camera appear slightly different in size than they actually are. In production measurement, where parts vary by fractions of a millimetre in height, telecentric optics are essential for consistent ±5 µm accuracy across the full measurement field.
What does 100% production inspection mean, and what is the benefit over AQL sampling?+
In 100% inspection every single part is measured before it ships — not one in fifty or one in a hundred. AQL sampling statistically accepts that a fraction of defective parts will escape to customers undetected. With 100% inspection on the QMM, every defective part is caught at source. For industries where a single defective part reaching the customer has major consequences — automotive IATF 16949 zero-defect programmes, medical devices, aerospace — 100% inspection is the only acceptable standard.
Can the QMM be integrated into an automated production line or robotic cell?+
Yes. All Opto QMMs provide digital I/O for integration with robotic arms, conveyors, and automated assembly lines. The machine receives a trigger signal to start measurement and outputs a digital pass/fail signal to a downstream sorting or rejection mechanism. The under-3-second measurement cycle is compatible with production line cycle times across most manufacturing applications.
How many part templates can the QMM store and how is data managed?+
The SQL database supports over 5,000 part templates and stores complete measurement results for every part ever measured — with timestamp, batch number, and operator ID. Up to 50 QMM machines on a single LAN can share one central database, allowing quality managers to access all measurement data and SPC trends from any networked workstation, supporting full traceability for customer complaints and audit responses.
What is the difference between Opto Vertical, Horizontal, and VH series?+
Vertical (V): camera looks down at the part from above — for flat parts where critical features are visible in the top view (stamped parts, pressed blanks, mouldings). Horizontal (H): camera looks horizontally at the part profile — for long parts, shafts, and parts that cannot be laid flat without distorting their geometry. Vertical-Horizontal (VH): both orientations in one instrument — for parts with critical dimensions in both the top view and side view, measured without re-fixturing, in a single combined report.
What accuracy does the Optomech QMM achieve?+
The Opto series QMM achieves ±5 µm measurement accuracy with 1 µm least count. This is achieved through the 20 MP CMOS sensor, double telecentric lens, and blue LED telecentric illumination working together to maximise edge detection consistency. For typical production inspection tolerances of 20–50 µm, this provides a comfortable 4–10× measurement accuracy ratio.
How long does it take to programme a new part on the QMM?+
Template creation for a new part takes 15–30 minutes for a new operator and 5–10 minutes for an experienced one. The process: place a good reference part on the measurement surface, draw a selection box around the part edge, the system automatically detects the contour, set nominal dimensions and tolerances, name and save. No CAD import, no scripting, no metrology software expertise required. The template is stored in the SQL database and recalled instantly by part number thereafter.
