Technology Overview

What is a Vision Measuring Machine?

A Vision Measuring Machine (VMM) — also called a Video Measuring Machine or Optical CMM — uses a calibrated digital camera mounted on a precision motorized stage to capture images of a workpiece and extract dimensional data through automated edge detection algorithms. No probing. No contact. No part deflection.

The operator places the part on the stage, the camera traverses to each feature, the software automatically detects the edge, and the system computes the dimension with full tolerance comparison. A complete inspection report is generated at the end of the routine. In CNC mode, the entire sequence runs automatically without operator intervention.

Where VMMs Outperform Other Instruments

SituationWhy VMM is Preferred
Many features per partCamera captures entire FOV — measure 20+ dimensions in one image
Delicate or soft materialsZero contact — no deflection, marking, or damage
Fine, small featuresCamera magnification reveals sub-mm features impossible to probe
PCBs and electronicsFlat, reflective parts easily handled on stage
Scripted production batchesCNC series runs fully automated inspection programs
Mixed parts per shiftSwitch part programs in seconds — no fixture changes

One Platform. Four Levels of Capability.

All VPP models share the same measurement philosophy and software ecosystem. Operators trained on the ME series work immediately on the CNC series. Choose the series that matches your automation and accuracy requirements today — and scale up when you need to.

The VPP ME is Optomech's entry-level vision measuring machine. The XY stage is moved manually by the operator using precision handwheels. The camera provides a high-quality live image, and the software's edge detection algorithms measure features automatically once the operator positions the camera over each feature.

The right choice for quality labs that currently use profile projectors or optical comparators and want to step up to automated edge detection and multi-feature measurement — without the cost of a full CNC system. Measurement throughput is operator-dependent but significantly faster than manual instruments.

The VPP CNC series offers the highest level of automation and accuracy in the standard VPP range. All three axes are driven by Panasonic AC servo motors with 0.1 µm scale resolution. The machine follows a pre-programmed CNC measurement routine without operator intervention — traverse, image, detect, record, report.

Programming uses a simple learn-mode: the operator moves the machine to each feature manually once, the software records the sequence, and the machine runs it automatically from then on. No G-code or CNC programming experience required. The right choice for production SPC programmes, PPAP submissions, and batch inspection.

Illumination Technology

Three Illumination Modes for Any Material

Consistent illumination is as important as accurate encoders. VPP instruments offer three illumination modes — individually or in combination — to handle diverse surface materials, colours, and textures.

Transmitted (Profile) LED

Backlighting through the stage glass creates a sharp, high-contrast shadow silhouette. Ideal for edge measurement of opaque parts — stamped metal, punch profiles, gears, slots, and any part where the external contour is what you're measuring.

Best: Edge Measurement

Ring LED (Reflected Surface)

LED ring around the lens illuminates the part surface from multiple angles simultaneously. Reduces shadows and highlights surface features — holes, slots, engravings, text markings, and surface geometry not visible in silhouette.

Best: Surface Features
💠

Coaxial (Axial) LED

Light projected coaxially through the lens axis reflects directly off flat surfaces back to the camera. Eliminates glare on mirror-finish and lapped surfaces — essential for PCBs, polished metal, and any specular component where ring light causes wash-out.

Best: Reflective Surfaces
CNC Advantage: On CNC and CNC HD models, all illumination channels are programmable within the inspection routine. The machine switches between illumination types automatically per measurement feature — no operator intervention required.

VPP Metrology Software

Windows-based with a touchscreen-friendly interface designed for quality lab operation — not for CAD/CAM specialists. The same software runs across the entire VPP series, so operator training carries across all models.

📐 Geometric Measurement

Points, lines, circles, arcs, ellipses, rectangles, angles, and distances — all measured by automated edge detection algorithms. GD&T evaluations: flatness, straightness, roundness, perpendicularity, concentricity, position, run-out.

🤖 CNC Learn-Mode Programming

Move the machine to each feature once. The software records the sequence. From then on the machine runs the complete programme automatically. No G-code. No CNC experience required.

📊 Reporting & SPC

Automatic dimensional reports to Microsoft Word, Excel, and PDF — with pass/fail status, tolerances, and nominal vs. actual. Real-time SPC charts, Cp/Cpk calculations, and trend monitoring.

📁 CAD Import & Export

DXF import for nominal profile overlay; DXF export of measured profiles for reverse engineering workflows. Separate part programmes per part number with full batch management.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a VMM (Vision Measuring Machine) and a CMM?+
A CMM uses a touch probe to physically contact the part and record 3D coordinates. A VMM uses a digital camera and edge detection software to measure features optically, with no contact. VMMs are faster for 2D and 2.5D features and handle soft, delicate, or thin-walled parts a probe would distort. CMMs remain better for deep internal bores and complex 3D surfaces. Many labs use both complementarily.
What is autofocus in a VMM and why does it improve measurement quality?+
Autofocus continuously monitors image contrast and drives the motorized Z axis to maintain optimal focus as the camera traverses across the part. Without autofocus, the operator must manually refocus every time the surface height changes — slow and operator-dependent. With autofocus, focus is maintained automatically, improving both throughput and repeatability, especially on stepped or varying-height parts.
What does the accuracy specification 2.5 + L/250 µm mean in practice?+
It means 2.5 µm base uncertainty plus 1 µm per 250 mm of measurement length. For a 100 mm dimension: 2.5 + 0.4 = 2.9 µm. For a 300 mm dimension: 2.5 + 1.2 = 3.7 µm. This is the ISO 10360-7 convention for expressing accuracy as a function of measurement length — comparable to high-quality touch-probe CMMs for 2D features.
Can the VPP CNC be programmed without G-code or CNC experience?+
Yes. The VPP CNC series uses learn-mode programming: the operator moves the machine to each feature manually the first time and the software records the sequence. From then on the machine runs completely automatically. No G-code, CAM software, or CNC programming experience required. A quality engineer can typically create the first programme within a few hours of training.
What is the difference between ring LED, coaxial, and transmitted illumination on a VMM?+
Transmitted (backlight) illumination creates a sharp silhouette for edge measurement. Ring LED illuminates the part surface evenly for surface features and holes. Coaxial illumination projects light through the lens axis for reflective or specular surfaces like PCBs and lapped metal. CNC and CNC HD models can switch between all three within a single inspection routine automatically.
Can an Optomech VPP VMM also use a touch probe for 3D features?+
Yes. The VPP MAZ and VPP CNC series support an optional Renishaw-compatible touch probe. The probe measures 3D features not optically accessible — deep bores, internal radii, undercuts, and vertical-face features. Probe and vision measurements share the same software and part coordinate system, producing a single inspection report.
Which VPP series is best for production inspection?+
The VPP CNC series. It runs a fully automated inspection programme: load the part, press Start, receive the report. 0.1 µm scale resolution and 2.5+L/250 µm accuracy. For large parts up to 600×500 mm, the CNC HD series is the right choice. Both are suitable for SPC programmes and PPAP documentation.
What industries use Optomech VPP Vision Measuring Machines?+
Automotive Tier 1 and 2 suppliers (stamped panels, castings, brackets), aerospace (blade profiles, fasteners, composite parts), electronics manufacturing (PCBs, connectors, LED packages), medical devices (implant and instrument dimensions), and precision engineering (gears, turned parts, injection mouldings).
