Product Context

What Is OCR / OCV Inspection on Packaging Lines?

OCR (optical character recognition) and OCV (optical character verification) use machine vision to check that batch codes, lot numbers, and expiry dates printed on labels or packs are present, readable, and correct for that run.

On pharmaceutical and FMCG lines in India, an unreadable expiry or a wrong lot code is a recall and audit risk. A handheld scanner beep only proves one unit decoded once — it does not prove every pack matches the batch recipe.

Optomech’s Label Inspection System (LIS) already covers label presence, placement, and barcode checks. OCR/OCV is the primary landing for variable-data print verification — batch expiry, lot codes, and related printed strings — engineered as an LIS add-on/capability.

Honest positioning: Optomech verifies printed variable data with vision. This page is not a CDSCO serialization portal, DSCSA track-and-trace suite, or end-to-end coding software product. If you need integration to an existing coder/ERP recipe, we scope that as application engineering — not as a fake catalogue claim.

Capabilities

Batch Expiry, Lot Code & Variable-Data Checks

Target keywords map to real inspection jobs: OCR/OCV for pharma packaging in India, batch expiry print verification, lot code vision inspection, and label OCR machines that catch wrong or unreadable codes at line speed.

📅
Batch / Expiry Print
Verify manufacture and expiry date strings match the run recipe — catch wrong dates, missing digits, and smudged print
🔢
Lot Code Vision
Confirm lot / batch numbers are complete, legible, and correct — not just “something printed in the window”
🔤
OCR + OCV
Read characters and/or verify against expected templates with quality thresholds for downstream readability
📊
Barcode Cross-Check
Where scoped with LIS: barcode/QR presence and decode quality alongside printed batch text

Inspection Coverage

How Label OCR / OCV Vision Works

Lighting and camera geometry are chosen for the print method and substrate so characters stay high-contrast at line speed — whether codes sit on wrap labels, cartons, or sleeves.

01

Pack Enters Zone

Labelled / coded packs pass the Optomech inspection head, triggered by encoder or photocell at production speed.

02

Image Capture

Industrial cameras with application lighting capture the variable-data region (and label/barcode ROIs when combined with LIS).

03

OCR / OCV Decision

Software reads or verifies characters against the expected batch/expiry string and quality thresholds — pass or reject in real time.

04

Reject & Record

Defective packs are ejected. Images and counts support QA review, coder tuning, and audit trails.

Application-Tuned Optics

Camera and lens choice for inkjet, thermal-transfer, or laser codes on curved bottles, flats, or cartons — validated on your samples.

💡

Print-Contrast Lighting

Lighting selected so dark-on-light or light-on-dark codes remain stable under factory ambient light across SKUs.

🗂️

Recipe & Expected Strings

Per-SKU recipes store ROI, fonts/templates, and expected batch/expiry patterns recalled at changeover.

Fits with LIS / BIS / CIS

Designed as part of Optomech’s packaging vision stack — combine label OCR with bottle and cap inspection in one line programme.

⚙️

Pneumatic Rejection

Wrong or unreadable codes removed without stopping the conveyor. Confirm-eject options where the line requires it.

🖥️

Operator Touchscreen

Live images and recent rejects help operators catch coder nozzle faults or wrong-batch strings early in the shift.

🔒

Access Control & Audit

Role-based access protects expected-string settings. Reporting supports QA and customer audit needs on pharma/FMCG lines.

Who Needs OCR / OCV Inspection in India?

Any packaging line where wrong or unreadable batch, lot, or expiry text creates regulatory, retailer, or brand exposure benefits from 100% print verification.

💊

Pharmaceutical Packaging

Primary and secondary pharma packs where batch number and expiry legibility are GMP-critical. OCR/OCV under LIS complements bottle and cap stations on the same plant.

How OCR/OCV Fits with LIS, BIS & CIS

Optomech engineers packaging vision as a coherent stack — not disconnected gadgets. OCR/OCV is the variable-data layer that sits with label inspection and alongside bottle and closure systems.

🏗️

Made in India Since 1981

Optomech designs and manufactures machine vision inspection equipment in Hyderabad. OCR/OCV inherits the same engineering discipline as LIS, BIS, and CIS.

🧩

Honest LIS Positioning

We market OCR/OCV as an LIS capability for print verification — not as a competing track-and-trace narrative against dedicated serialization specialists.

🎯

Application-Engineered

Fonts, contrast, code location, and expected strings are validated on your packs. No brochure-only claims or invented model prices on this page.

🎓

Onsite Commissioning

Engineers install, tune OCR/OCV recipes, train operators, and stay until reject behaviour is understood for your print methods.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

An OCR/OCV inspection system uses machine vision to read (OCR) or verify (OCV) printed characters on labels, cartons, or bottles — typically batch/lot numbers, manufacture dates, and expiry dates — and compares them to the expected string for that production run. Defective or unreadable prints are rejected at line speed.
OCR (optical character recognition) reads characters into a string. OCV (optical character verification) checks that printed characters match a known expected pattern or template at sufficient quality. Packaging lines often use both: read the batch/expiry text, then confirm it matches the recipe and is legible enough for auditors and downstream scanners.
No. This capability verifies printed variable data with cameras — commonly under the LIS programme. We do not market it as DSCSA, CDSCO serialization software, or end-to-end track-and-trace. Integration to a customer’s existing coder or ERP recipe can be scoped separately as application engineering.
OCR/OCV sits naturally with Optomech LIS (label presence, placement, print, and barcode). On a full line it complements BIS (empty bottle QC) and CIS (cap/closure) so bottle quality, closures, labels, and batch/expiry legibility share one vision programme.
No. Optomech is a packaging vision OEM for systems such as BIS, CIS, LIS, ISIVS, FOSIS, CANIS, and PBIS. OCR/OCV batch and expiry verification is offered as an engineered LIS capability for your packs and print methods — without inventing fake model numbers or list prices on this page.
Pharmaceutical and nutraceutical packaging, FMCG food and personal care, beverage secondary packs, and other regulated or brand-sensitive lines where wrong or unreadable batch/expiry text creates recall, audit, or retailer rejection risk.
